Institutional AV: Cinema-Grade Screening Rooms in Pakistan
Some AV projects are about entertainment. Others are about education.
When an institution invests in a screening room, the goal isn't simply to play a film. It is to give students and faculty access to the same technical standards used in professional post production and exhibition, so that what they learn in the classroom translates directly to the industry.
Cinematics has designed and installed cinema-grade screening rooms for two of Pakistan's institutions, Karachi Film School and the Institute of Business Management (IoBM), and both projects illustrate what institutional AV integration looks like in practice.
Karachi Film School: A Cinema-Grade Screening Room
For Karachi Film School, Cinematics built a cinema-grade screening room designed to give students a genuine reference environment. Film students need to see and hear their work the way it will be experienced in a real cinema, not on a laptop screen or a pair of headphones.
That requirement shapes every decision in the room, from screen size and projection to speaker placement and acoustic treatment. A screening room used for education has to be accurate and repeatable, so that what a student hears today matches what they will hear the next time they use the room.
IoBM: A Custom Acoustic-Panelled Screening Room
At the Institute of Business Management, Cinematics designed and installed a custom acoustic-panelled screening room, built specifically for the space available on campus. Acoustic treatment is one of the most overlooked parts of any screening room project, and it is often the difference between a room that sounds correct and one that simply has expensive equipment in it.
Every room has its own acoustic behaviour, shaped by its dimensions, materials, and layout. A screening room built for an institution needs to account for all of that from the beginning, rather than treating acoustic panelling as an afterthought once the equipment has already been installed. You can see both of these projects, along with our home cinema work, in our case studies.
Why Institutions Choose Purpose-Built AV
Unlike a home cinema or a corporate boardroom, an institutional screening room typically serves many different users over its lifetime: different classes, different students, and different faculty members, often for years after the original installation.
That means the system needs to be reliable, straightforward to operate, and built to a standard that does not degrade with heavy daily use. It also needs to reflect real industry standards, since a screening room built for education is meant to prepare students for professional environments, not just impress visitors.
Planning an Institutional AV Project?
Whether it is a screening room, a lecture hall, an auditorium, or a multi purpose space, Cinematics works with schools, universities, and institutions across Pakistan to design AV systems built around how the space will actually be used. If your project is a corporate space or a hospitality venue instead, our guides to boardroom automation and hotel AV systems cover those in more depth.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a cinema-grade screening room?
A cinema-grade screening room is designed and calibrated to reflect the technical standards used in professional film exhibition, including screen size, projection quality, speaker placement, and acoustic treatment.
Why does acoustic treatment matter in a screening room?
Acoustic treatment controls how sound behaves inside a room. Without it, even high quality equipment can sound inconsistent or unclear, which is a particular problem in a space used for critical listening or film education.
Has Cinematics worked with educational institutions before?
Yes. Cinematics has designed and installed cinema-grade screening rooms for Karachi Film School and the Institute of Business Management (IoBM).
Are institutional AV systems different from home cinema systems?
Yes. Institutional systems are used by many different people over a long period of time, so they need to be reliable, simple to operate, and built to withstand regular daily use, in addition to sounding correct.
Do you design AV for lecture halls and auditoriums, not just screening rooms?
Yes. Cinematics works with schools, universities, and institutions across Pakistan on screening rooms, lecture halls, auditoriums, and other multi purpose spaces.
How does an institutional AV project usually start?
It begins with a site visit and a conversation about how the space will be used, followed by a system design tailored to the room and the institution's requirements.
